La Virgen de los Sicarios (Our Lady of the Assassins) is harsh, pitiless, angry and funny. The narrator, a middle-aged gay man returning to the city of his upbringing, recounts his involvement with two youths, both killers for hire in the drug-distorted economy of Medellín. Theirs is a profession without a long-term future. Both come from 'las comunas', the high slums of Medellín: Vallejo's vertical geography of the city, with the many churches as the waymarks, is one of the striking features ofA very energetic voice that propels the narrative of this book forward. I can see why this was such a big deal when it was published. I was surprised that one of the main characters was killed off in the relative middle. This would be a fun book to read aloud; it is like listening to a crazy monologue of some ranting old man sitting too close to you on the bus. I feel like it didn't really do anything that new or revelatory, but hey, the purpose of this book was to depict the messed up violence
Reminded me of Pedro Lemebel's Tengo miedo, Torero.
This was just, just, well just 'ugh'! Dark, violent and repetitive (oh look he just shot someone, now he shoots someone else and there he is shooting yet another person, now I'll comment for the 20th time how violent Columbia is and how corrupt the society is before the next person gets shot). There is some very dark and black humour running through but still, not my sort of book.I will say though that if this book is truly 'autobiographical' then the author is a murderous psycho whether he
