Rendition During Books Portrait of a Starter: An Unhidden Story (Starters #0.5)
Michael is a starter, and an artist. In a world ravaged by the Spore Wars, Michael lost his parents. Only the young and old remain. Most of the young appear to have nothing, and are unable to work but the old appear to be well off. Only a select few young who have been claimed by distant relatives seem to be well off. Michael lives with his friend Callie and her younger brother Tyler. When Callie asks Michael to watch her sick brother for the day, but wont tell him what she is up to he is worried. Michael follows her and what he finds is a company called Prime Destinations. But what is Prime Destinations all about and why did Callie go there? This is a great introductory short to the Starters series. I read the chapter sampler for Starters before reading this short and I love how it all fits together so far. I can't wait to read Starters and learn more about this world. I loved the little twist at the end. Looking forward to more from this series.

In this short prequel to "Starters," Michael becomes suspicious when Callie sneaks out to meet with an impeccably groomed and dressed Starter and visit a mysterious business called Prime Destinations. This story is cute, but doesn't really add much to the overall plot. We don't really learn anything new that fills in some gaps, or get some new perspective that has us reexamining beliefs. It's just a quick story of Michael spying on Callie.Portrait of a Starter by Lissa Price is a novella in the Starters series. It is about Callie and Michael before the events of Starters. It is a very good novella because it is told from Michael's point of view.
Ugh, no no no. If this was supposed to make me want to read the first book in the series it did not succeed. I found Michael to be quite creepy, watching Callie sleep and sketching her while doing so and then following her to see what she's up to (obviously a plot device).
Whoever thought up the idea of having authors write short stories to accompany novels is a genius! I loved Portrait of a Starter! The opportunity to get inside Michael's head... the chance to learn a little more about the STARTERS' world. But the story alone was really fun too, following Michael on his own adventure. I loved watching him draw Callie and I'm pretty sure his sketch represents the book's awesome cover. That was a fun connection to make, but it also made the ending really touching.
This short story is a glimpse of Michael's life just as Callie makes the decision to go to Prime Destinations. You get a little taste of Michael's growing feelings for Callie, and his disgust for those that decide to allow Enders to use their bodies. This was such a short glimpse - I definitely wanted to know much more!
I haven't read yet the others books in the series, but I really like the world that Lissa Price has created. I liked to read an extract with Michael's point of view. It left me wanting to know more about it and read the entire books! If you hadn't read yet the entire books in the series you can read this before, like I did. It's very quick but really good. And maybe some day I'll read the series. :)
