Ah, the thrilling conclusion! After Mithril Hall's glorious triumph in actualy managing to not all die, things still aren't looking much better. This book gets a little more into some of the happenings to the south, with Nesme and the trolls. Mithril Hall is now besieged by thousands of orcs, and however many giants that are still sticking around ("Boom!"). Word is finally starting to get out to some of the neighboring cities, and slowly but surely the gears are turning (or not..).Also, DrizztI always enjoy Drizzt books. He's an interesting character with a lot of depth. I can't imagine reading this book first though. Starting with Drizzt in Menzoberrazan is so crucial.
Salvatore is shuffling the deck quite a bit with this book ... I like most of his choices, though I have to make a simple question ... where are the supply lines for all those thousands of orcs .?. what are they going to eat in the "barren land" in which they are barricading themselves ? Practical questions in a fantasy book ? Yes, why not ... fantasy does not equate "total unrealistic", after all ...
After finally finishing this trilogy I was rather disappointed. There's just too much of Driz'zt moping around and being depressed. The whole tone of the book is depressing. Ultimately, little is resolved by the end of the book; the next book picks up right where this one left off. After reading three books about invading orcs, I had hoped they would have been dealt with, but no, they're still there.
The action and battles in this book were great. There were several amazing moments between the dwarves and the orcs. If you are reading this for the action this made it worth it. However; this was definitely the weakest book of this trilogy. It struggled on several fronts.Firstly, it harped even more on the forced romance angle with Cattle-brie and Drittz... bleh. This review will have some spoilers.This is the second time I read this book. The whole trilogy is good, and I like it a lot more than the Sellswords Series that came before. Salvatore is trying to do some transitioning here and tying up some loose ends. I was not a big fan of the Delly/Colson storyline, and that came to an end here pretty much. I really liked how the sword Khazidhea was used in this book.There was some good troll battling early on in this book, and then just general fighting.
