Started off brilliant, but the book itself seemed to get tired fairly quickly and the ending seemed rushed.
Another Zola masterpiece. The hypocrisy of the clergy, social status, vicious gossip and the descent into madness and its consequences are just a few of the themes that drive this tale of human frailty and ambition. This story could be considered the sequel to The Fortune of the Rougons, the first of the Rougon-Macquart cycle, although it was sixth in Zolas recommended reading order.Marthe Rougon, the youngest of the Rougon siblings, and her husband, Francois Mouretfirst cousin to Marthe and

Wonderful, strange and brutal realisms
Zola offers up small town politics and a descent into madness fueled by the appearance of a priest with an aversion to bathing and sketchy relatives. It's not my favorite one so far, but still Zola.

Returning us to Plassans, and numerous characters from the first novel, this is one of Zola's anti-clerical novels, a sign of the foreboding role the Church had played in propagating both the Monarchy and then the Empire (and also of the author's own biases)!I don't think I

I do so like Zola - might even be 5 stars, but I feel I have to leave some room in the ratings for even better reads. There is Zola's good characterizations of his primary characters here, as usual. Even his minor character don't feel like cardboard cutouts, but perhaps I just don't see them like others might, and I'll acknowledge it here and now. In this, there is also some good plot, a bit of mystery. While there might not be any huge surprises, I wasn't able to see the turns of plot in theStarted off brilliant, but the book itself seemed to get tired fairly quickly and the ending seemed rushed.
