I stayed up til 3:30am reading the first story! Its dark, mysterious, and really gripping after a certain point (the first 10 pages or so feel really academic and stuffy). Really interesting to consider Lewiss ideas about Time. The rest of the collection was good, too, but be warned, its a bit maddening because many of them are unfinished!A collection of six short stories published posthumously, two of which are parts of incomplete manuscripts. The stories include ideas and themes such as time-travel, expeditions to Mars and the Moon and a retelling of the fall of Troy through the eyes of Menelaus. (It should perhaps be noted that the provenance of some of these works, in particular the titular one, are doubted by some Lewis scholars - but the authorship is supported by the publishers and Lewis' estate).This book serves nicely to
I never read Lewis's adult science fiction before and was amazed how good a writer he is. The dark tower is the majority of this collection and be warned it's only a fragment. Read the introductions because the editor explains how he came to possess these early chapters of what would have been an interesting, if even mind bending, sci-fi novel. The majority of the stories in this collection have been printed elsewhere--I read this one exclusively for The Dark Tower, an unfinished sequel to Out of the Silent Planet. It had promise--that compelling creepiness that characterizes much of Lewis's fiction that makes you want to simultaneously close the book and speed through to the end so you can know how it works out--but (at least in it's unfinished state) lacked the ties to the overarching gospel narrative shared by the rest of the Space
One day Lewis and Tolkien were complaining that the sort of books they wanted to read werent being written, so they decided they would have to write them themselves. Lewis was to write a story about space travel and Tolkien a story about time travel. The result was Out of the Silent Planet by Lewis.
